James Nightingale – Lumina Learning Global System Development

What’s your career background and what is your original connection to Lumina?

I graduated from university with a degree in Computer Software. In the last three years, throughout my time at university, I have mainly focused on web development, which has given me beneficial experience in creating small websites.

After spending the last few years in higher education,  I was lucky enough to come straight to Lumina Learning after finishing university. Lumina advertised the role through my university, and when I saw the job description, I instantly felt like Lumina was a good fit for me based on the skills needed and the flexibility that came with it.

What is your top Spark Aspect and how have you found this beneficial to your role?

My top Spark Aspect is Down to Earth. It’s beneficial to me as a Software Developer to have this quality as most of my role revolves heavily around focusing on the details of implementation rather than the end outcome. I enjoy focusing on the details and find that this ultimately increases my efficiency when working on projects.

What is your favourite thing so far about working at Lumina Learning?

I like the flexible structure in how we work, I get to choose what I work on at any given time, and I get the space and autonomy to prioritise my tasks in a way that works for me. The workday can sometimes be flexible, which works well for me as some days I can be up earlier and start to work on something and finish slightly earlier than the usual 9-5.30. My job is remote, which is ideal for me because I am pretty far out in terms of location. This gives me the freedom to spend the time I usually devote to commuting to get more things done outside of my work.

Do you have any Paradoxes? How do you see these working in your role – If you don’t have any, what Paradoxes do you think might be useful for you to develop?

My biggest Paradoxes are Inspiration Driven and Discipline Driven. I enjoy the flexibility that comes from being an Inspiration Driven person as my role requires me sometimes to be spontaneous when collaborating on projects or implementing them. The day can move so quickly that I need to rely on my gut instinct for ideas and changes. Likewise, being Discipline Driven helps me to be on time with projects, and reliable.

What’s a fun fact about you many people may not know?

During the pandemic, I took on something new and decided to start growing vegetables! I was taken aback by just how much I enjoyed it. I now regularly grow peppers, spring onions and garlic, and surprisingly, garlic grows really well in the winter!
